Abkhazia is a partially recognized state in the South Caucasus, which views the region as an autonomous republic. Abkhazia is located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains in northwestern Georgia.

Geography

Abkhazia covers 8,665 square kilometres (3,346 sq mi) and its population 245,000. Abkhazia's capital is Sukhumi.

The Caucasus Mountains to the north and northeast divide Abkhazia and the Russian Federation. To the east and southeast, Abkhazia is bounded by the Georgian region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti; and on the south and southwest by the Black Sea.
