Brief information about Zambia
Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa. It is bordered by eight countries: Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique to the southeast, Zimbabwe to the south, Botswana and Namibia to the southwest, Angola to the west, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north.
The capital and largest city of Zambia is Lusaka, located in the south-central part of the country. Zambia's population is made up of a variety of ethnic groups, with the Bemba group being the most populous.
Zambia's economy is heavily reliant on its mining industry, particularly its copper production, which accounts for the majority of its export earnings. In addition to mining, agriculture also plays a crucial role in the economy and livelihoods of its people.
Zambia has a rich and diverse culture, with over 70 ethnic groups, each with their own traditions and customs. English is the official language of Zambia, but a large number of indigenous languages are also spoken.
The country is known for its stunning landscapes, including the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It has several national parks and wildlife reserves that are home to a wide range of animal species, making it a popular destination for safari tourism.
Zambia gained independence from British rule in 1964 and has been a stable multiparty democracy since 1991.
Here is a quick statistical information about Zambia's area, population, demographics, history, and economy:
Area: Zambia covers an area of approximately 752,618 square kilometers (290,587 square miles), making it the 39th largest country in the world.
Population: As of my last update in September 2021, the estimated population of Zambia is approximately 18 million people. For the most current estimate, please check the latest data from a reliable source such as the United Nations or the World Bank.
Demographics: Zambia is home to over 70 different ethnic groups. The Bemba people form the country's largest ethnic group, followed by the Tonga, Chewa, and Lozi, among others. The official language is English, but numerous local languages are also spoken, including Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga.
History: The territory of modern Zambia was inhabited by Khoisan hunter-gatherers until around AD 300, when technologically advanced migrating tribes began to displace or assimilate them. In the 12th century, major waves of Bantu-speaking immigrants arrived during the Bantu expansion. The country fell under British control in the late 19th century and was named Northern Rhodesia. Zambia gained independence from British rule on October 24, 1964. The post-independence period was characterized by efforts to develop the economy and education sector, but also by political instability and economic difficulties.
Economy: Zambia's economy is heavily dependent on mining, particularly copper mining, which accounts for the majority of the country's export earnings. The country is the second-largest copper producer in Africa. In addition to mining, agriculture plays a vital role in Zambia's economy, with major products including corn, sorghum, rice, peanuts, sunflower seeds, vegetables, flowers, tobacco, cotton, sugarcane, cassava, and coffee. Despite its natural resources,
Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a GDP per capita of approximately $1,500 as of 2019.
