Brunei, officially known as the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace, is a small country located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by the South China Sea to the north and surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. With a total land area of 5,765 square kilometers, it is the 5th smallest country in Asia.

As of 2021, Brunei has an estimated population of around 438,000 people, making it one of the least populous countries in the world. The majority of the population is ethnic Malay, and Islam is the predominant religion.

Brunei has a long and rich history, dating back to the 7th century when it was known as the Kingdom of Po-ni. In the 15th century, it came under the influence of the Malacca Sultanate, followed by the Brunei Empire, which was a powerful maritime empire that controlled much of Borneo and the Philippines. The country became a British protectorate in the 19th century and gained independence in 1984.
